Animal Control Officer

The Town of Bridgewater is seeking an experienced individual to serve as the town's Animal Control Officer/Animal Inspector. Under the direction of the Town Manager, the successful candidate will serve as the sole member of the Animal Control Department and must be available to respond to situations involving wild and domestic animals. Duties will include but are limited to the enforcement of state and local laws regarding animals, including enforcement of the leash law, complaints regarding animals and animal cruelty are investigated by the Animal Control Officer. This person also works with other local agencies, such as social services and law enforcement, to protect all members of families, both two-legged and four-legged. Dead animals on public ways are also handled by the Animal Control Officer.  As the Animal Inspector, the successful candidate should be reasonably experienced in the care and handling of domestic livestock animals, be generally experienced in their husbandry and be knowledgeable in the handling and care of other domestic animals such as dogs and cats. Knowledge and experience with common “urban wildlife” such as raccoons, skunks and bats that expose domestic animals and come under the jurisdiction of the MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife will prove beneficial in the collection of specimens for submission to the State Rabies Laboratory. Municipal Animal Inspector will also be responsible for barn inspections and may be called to assist with domestic animal disease quarantines in the event of an outbreak.

The successful candidate:

  • Must be a seasoned and diplomatic professional with the ability to work well with all constituencies. 
  • Must have effective oral/written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to read and interpret Town, State and Federal regulations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record.
  • Final candidate must successfully pass a criminal background check (CORI), pre-employment physical examination and alcohol & substance screening.

Applicants must have a high school diploma, with at least 3-5 years of relevant experience. The current salary range is: $ 17,200.00 - $19,000.30 dependent upon qualifications. Additional stipend is available, if you provide own vehicle and equipment. The hours of this position are variable; therefore, the successful candidate must be available and willing to work on nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
