About the Board
Establishment:
The Senior Center Trustees were established
under Article 22 of the annual town meeting warrant voted June 21, 1993 at
the Annual Town Meeting, “to be called TRUSTEES FOR THE SENIOR CENTER AT 10
WALLY KRUEGER WAY; two (2) members appointed by the Board of Selectmen, two
(2) members appointed by the Council on Aging, one member appointed by the
Senior Building Committee. Each appointment will be for a one (1) year term.
The responsibilities of the committee will be to work with the Board of
Selectmen to determine the best way to operate the new Senior Center”.
The Senior Center Trustee’s post an open
meeting at the Town Clerk for a meeting once a month at the Senior Center.
Governed by the Board of Selectmen, the
Trustees of the Senior Center manage a budget for the maintenance of daily
needs of the Senior Center building, minor repairs, supplies related to
operation of the building, and replacement of necessary items to maintain
the building in good condition, including contracting for cleaning the
facility.
Senior Center Trust Fund:
In 1994, the
Trustees were successful with the Legislature under Chapter 233 of the Acts
of 1994, in establishing a Senior Center Trust Fund, the interest on which
is to accrue to the Trust Fund under the legislation, for the purpose of
being prepared to make major changes to the Senior Center, as needed, or to
purchase major necessities for the use of the Senior Center Building. No
funds were provided by the town for this fund. All funds raised to date,
approximately $61,000.00, have been raised by volunteers, many of them
seniors. Suppers were held for several years, whist parties are held every
month, and individuals have donated funds. Several of the Meals on Wheels
drivers have donated their stipends to the Trust Fund regularly. Several
individuals who have held birthday celebrations at the Senior Center have
donated their gift money to the Trust Fund. Two of the current Selectmen
have donated their Selectmen’ salaries to the Senior Center, one to the
Trust Fund and one to the Expansion Account set up by the town with the
proceeds of the sale of the Hunt School to the Bridgewater State College.
Donations have been made in memory of past active members of the original
Senior Center Building Committee and others who have been involved with the
Center. Individual donations to the Senior Center Trust Fund can be made at
any time through the Trustees.
