Service Projects

From:   David Moore, Chairman
              Bridgewater Historical Commission

Re:        Service Projects

We offer the following ideas for projects:

  1. There is a need top photograhically document the town in black and white photos. The town can easily be divided into 6 sections and photographs made of significant areas and those most likely to change, ie; old homes and buildings, farm land, small country roads and so on.

  2. Collect and label photos, record personal accounts of work and daily life in Bridgewater in the 20th century.

  3. Research and documentation on the first Bridgewater Town house, circa 1830, original location of BSC classes, 1840.

  4. Research and documentation on the Bridgewater Ironworks site. This site was recently placed on the National Historic Register and is under development by the town as a town park. Help is needed in locating the exact location of the original 18d' century blast furnace, and other operations on the site. Research in needed to locate grant funding to develop the park.

  5. Research and documentation on Bridgewater and the 20'h century. A considerable amount of information exists on Bridgewater prior to 191 0. In 1920 there were thousands of people employed by the shoe, iron and cotton gin industries in town. Today there are less than 50 jobs in these industries. What happen to these jobs and why? The rise and fall of these industries mirrored the world economy. What products produced in Bridgewater had a significant effect on the world economy'.? What were the major immigrant populations that worked in these plants? Where did they live in town?

  6. Many Bridgewater residents have great "histories" to record about life in town in the last century. A standard set of questions should be developed for interviews, interviews undertaken and written up for future reference.

  7. Where were all of the "Mom and Pop" neighborhood grocery stores in town?

  8. How have town, local school and athletic programs evolved over the years? Where have the games been played?

  9. Where did all of the street names come from? Why do we have a Hale Street, Stetson, Kieth, Plymouth, High, Plain, Bedford and so on?

  10. Where is Auburnville, Prattown, Scotland, Stanley, China, Titicut and how did they get these names?

  11. Is there an Indian burial site on BSC property?

  12. What was the impact of the railroad and electric street cars on Bridgewater and BSC.
